Oil on fabric
30 x 40 in
In this piece I explore themes of confidence, identity, and the complex interplay between visibility and invisibility that many people of color experience. The portrait stands strong with a gesture of assuredness as she touches her shades. Using a camouflage-like technique, I piece together abstract forms, reflecting the layered nature of identity and how one navigates spaces where they may either blend in or stand out.
Oil paint allowed me to capture the richness of tones, while the fabric wrapping symbolizes protection, comfort, and the multifaceted aspects of cultural heritage. The fragmented, yet cohesive imagery invites viewers to reflect on how identity is not singular, but composed of various parts coming together to create a whole. Through this work, I aim to challenge traditional notions of portraiture, while celebrating resilience and the quiet power of self-assurance.
